According to a report in today’s USA TODAY, the inauguration of President Barack Obama has led to a dramatic upsurge in cosmetic procedures in the Washington DC area. Quick cosmetic fixes such as Botox, injectable fillers, and microdermabrasion have been in high demand as people prepare to attend the inauguration and all the festivities that will surround it. I suspect that more vials of Botox and injectable fillers will be used in people attending this event than the number of portable toilets that have been brought in for the event. (estimates of 5,000)

Such demand for these cosmetic procedures is predictable despite the economic times. These are time-proven procedures that provide immediate and great short-term results and have no downtime. When it comes to a special event like the inauguration, or any other great event in one’s life like a wedding, cost is usually no object. The issue is exclusively what will work the quickest.

Botox, injectable fillers, and skin texturing treatments have been largely responsible for most of the surge in cosmetic procedures in the past five years and have largely been responsible for the explosion in the medspa business worldwide. While their numbers may be temporarily down for now, people will still splurge on them to look their best for special events.
