A custom jawline implant can have a noticeable effect on a sagging neck, but the effect depends heavily on the cause of the neck laxity (skin, fat, muscle, or skeletal support). Here’s how it works anatomically and aesthetically.
1. Structural effect: expanding the jawline
Custom jawline implants augment the inferior border of the mandible (chin + jaw angles) and wrap around the lower face. This expansion creates a clearer separation between the jawline and neck, which visually sharpens the cervicomental angle.
Effect on the neck:
- Creates a stronger mandibular edge
- Produces a more defined shadow line
- Makes the neck look tighter and more sculpted
While this is partly a visual illusion it is also partly structural.
2. Skin recruitment (mild lifting effect)
When the jawline is enlarged with a custom implant, the overlying soft tissue and skin must stretch over the new contour.
This can:
- Recruit skin upward from the neck
- Slightly tighten the submental area
- Reduce mild neck laxity
Larger implants tend to produce greater lifting of the neck tissues because more skin is recruited upward to cover the expanded jawline.
3. Improvement of submental fullness
In patients with:
- a weak chin
- a short mandibular body
- poor jaw projection
a jawline implant increases projection and length of the jaw, which reduces the appearance of a double chin or neck fullness.
This works because:
- the chin moves forward
- the soft tissues under the chin tighten
- the neck–jaw angle improves.
4. Limitations
A jawline implant does not completely correct certain neck problems such as::
- large turkey necks
- submental fat
- wide platysmal banding
These can be treated concomitantly with the jawline implant during or after with procedures such as:
- neck liposuction
- submentoplasty
- platysmaplasty
- Facelift/necklift
5. Typical outcomes based on patient type
Younger patients
Often see:
- better jawline definition
- reduction of mild submental fullness
- improvement without additional procedures
Older patients
May see:
- noticeable improvement in neck contour
- but sometimes still require neck lift or submental work.
? Summary
A custom jawline implant can improve a sagging neck by:
- strengthening the mandibular border
- creating a sharper jaw–neck separation
- recruiting skin upward (mild lifting)
- improving chin projection and neck contour
