In 2006, the 24 Member Boards of the American Board of Medical Specialities (ABMS), which includes the American Board of Plastic Surgery, made it mandatory that all existing diplomates (to remain board-certified) participate in the continuous Maintenance of Certification (MOC) process. This change reflects the American Board of Plastic Surgery’s commitment to raising the standard of plastic surgery care through lifelong learning and on-going self-assessment. The MOC examinations are based on the most current research on physician competence, patient safety and practice management to keep the plastic surgeon well-prepared for patient expectations and accountability.
