Plastic surgery has very little to do with…plastic. Plastic as a well known material has been around since its discovery and synthesis from petrochemicals in 1951. But plastic surgery as a medical procedure has been around for hundreds of years before. In looking at the many hundreds of plastic surgery procedures, very few of them actually involve the implantation of a plastic material. The name Plastic Surgery comes from the Greek word Plastikos, meaning to mold or to shape. This simple word best describes what almost every plastic surgery procedure does whether it is for an aesthetic change or for restoration of an altered face or body part.
