Breast implants continue to be one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries, accounting for over 300,000 procedures last year in the U.S. alone. While breast implants seem like they have been around forever, it is now a mere 50 years since the first breast augmentation surgery was performed in the spring of 1962 in Texas. While the original plastic surgeons who performed the procedure have passed, the first patient is still alive today. At 80 years of age, Timmie Jean Lindsey was recently interviewed and described how she became the first patient for this novel and experimental cosmetic procedure. While breast implants should not be expected to last anywhere near 50 years, she still remains implanted with her original implants.
