Misshapen ears are a common aesthetic problem. Given the complexity of the shape of the ear, which is largely determined by its cartilage component, it is amazing that it develops in utero and appears after birth as well formed as it often is. While manipulation of the external ear can be done by a variety of plastic surgery procedures as a child, teen or adult, it can be much more easily in the first few months after birth. At this early neonatal period, the ear cartilage is very soft and not yet stiff. If manipulated by external molding methods during this small window after birth, the ear can be reshaped without surgery. The cartilage stiffens quickly after birth so such ear molding must be before the second or third month after birth.
