Plastic Surgery at Indiana University (IU) Health North and West Hospitals

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

It isn’t very often that a large corporation takes on a complete name change. This is particularly rare in the medical world with a hospital system. But that is exactly what is happening this month in the Clarian Health System. Since 1997, Clarian Health has existed as a core set of downtown Indianapolis hospitals, Methodist, University, and Riley Hospital for Children. Since its inception it has also acquired over a dozen hospitals around the state, creating the largest statewide hospital system and the only one closely aligned with the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Despite having multiple locations across the state, however, the Clarian name doesn’t resonate with much familiarity outside of Indianapolis. After undertaking a large market research study, Clarian is launching an historic name change to more clearly define its mission and statewide focus.  Clarian will change its name to Indiana University Health effective this month. Indiana University Health will better identify Clarian’s unique brand of nationally recognized health care, reinforce its partnership with Indiana University and the IU School of Medicine, which provides patients with access to innovative research and treatments, and better reflect the breadth of its mission. Each and every hospital in the system will change their names as well with Indiana University (IU) Health preceding the hospital location in most cases.

As I have two plastic surgery practices in suburban Clarian locations, this name will affect the two hospitals where these facilities exist. My northside Indianapolis location at Clarian North Medical Center in Carmel will change its name to Indiana University (IU) Health North Hospital. My westside Indianapolis location at Clarian West Medical Center in Avon will change its name to Indiana University (IU) Health West Hospital.

While a hospital name change can initially be confusing for patients, the practice phone numbers (IU Health North 317.706.4444, IIU Health West 317.217.2200), the website (www.eppleyplasticsurgery.com) and the email address, info@eppleyplasticsurgery.com will remain the same. It will take some time before GPS locaters will be able to identify the hospital locations by these new names however.

As the Clarian name fades away and the Indiana University Health name emerges, we at Eppley Plastic Surgery look forward to providing plastic surgery procedures, innovations and service that is commensurate with this new bold vision.

Plastic Surgery Discounts for Indiana University (IU) Health Employees

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

During the course of my work as a plastic surgeon in Indianapolis over the past two decades, I have had the opportunity to work almost exclusively within the Indiana University Health System. Given this name in 2011, the Indiana University Health System represents a large statewide network of facilities and health care providers. Extending from the downtown hub of original Methodist, University and Riley Children’s hospitals, it extends into suburban Indianapolis where Indiana University Health North in Carmel, Indiana University Health Hospital in Avon and IU Health Saxony Hospital in Fishers are located. Throughout the state of Indiana ten other hospitals are IU Health partners including IU HealthTipton Hospital, IU Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, IU Health Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington, IU Health Bloomington Hospital of Orange County in Paoli,  IU Health Bedford Hospital in Bedford, IU Health Blackford Hospital n Hartford City, IU Health Starke Hospital in Knox, IU Health Goshen Hospital in Goshen and IU Health LaPorte Hospital in Laporte.

Many of my patients have been cared for by IU Health Hospital providers, and some of those same physicians and their families have been actual patients of mine as well. In working with them, I have come to appreciate the tremendous professionalism and compassion they have for helping those patients who are suffering serious, debilitating illnesses. In appreciation of their past and future patient care efforts, I am offering incentives to IU Health employees for any desired cosmetic plastic surgery procedure(s). For those who want to change certain aspects of their outward appearance using well-established and successful cosmetic surgery procedures, the IU Health plastic surgery program may make it more attainable.

Any IU Health employee can benefit regardless of where you may be located in Indiana or at what hospital or facility. Each of the plastic surgery procedures available my website at www.eppleyplasticsurgery.com are eligible for this 10% discount toward the surgical fee. Some of the most popular and commonly requested plastic surgery procedures are:

Combination Gynecologic and Plastic Surgery Procedure at IU Health West Hospital in Avon, Indiana

As the field of medicine and surgery continues to advance, I am continually amazed at how different surgical procedures are being done, not only during the same surgery, but at exactly the same time. This is of great benefit to the patient and maximizes valuable operating room time and resources.

An example of such a case was on February 12, 2008 at the IU Health West Hospital in Avon, Indiana. A female patient was initially seen by me in Plastic Surgery for contouring of her arms to get rid of the flabby skin that inevitably results after a lot of weight loss.. She required formal arm lifts (brachioplasties) combined with liposuction of the area for improvement. She had a gynecologic issue with heavy bleeding and also needed a hysterectomy. The Gyn surgeon and myself worked out a time when we could do the surgery together. Because the operative fields were at ‘opposite ends’ so to speak, we were also able to work at the same time effectively cutting down the total operative time in half.

I have seen over the years a lot of different combinations of surgeries combined with plastic surgery, but a concurrent hysterectomy-arm lift is a new combination for me. When surgeons work together, patients benefit!

Plastic Surgery and Orthopedic Hand Surgery at IU Health North Hospital

Joint Plastic and Hand Surgery at IU Health North Hospital

Over the past twenty-five years, I have had the opportunity to operate on hundreds of facial trauma patients and repair thousands of facial fractures. I have done so many over the years that I was a co-author on a major 1000 page textbook on facial trauma entitled, Maxillofacial Trauma and Esthetic Facial Reconstruction. Despite this extensive experience, I have never had the opportunity to do a facial fracture repair like I did last week at IU Health North Hospital in Carmel, Indiana.

I was asked to see a patient who fell at home while working and sustained fractures of his wrist and his face. When I saw the patient, his right side of his face was terribly swollen and his hand and wrist were in a cast. Working with an Orthopedic Surgeon, we coordinated a surgery for later that week in which we could repair both problems during the same surgery. Normally, surgeons may do their procedures during the same operation but rarely are surgeries performed concurrently at the same time. (we surgeons are territorial and like our space!) In an one and half-hour operation, this patient had his wrist and four facial bones repaired, not only saving him from having to undergo two separate surgeries on different days but cutting the normal time in surgery for these problems in half!

This joint effort provided a great service to the patient from which he was deeply appreciative.  While many complain about the inefficiency of modern medicine, this surgery case reminds me of its many benefits as well.

Medical History in Plastic Surgery at IU Health West Hospital

Joint Gynecological and Plastic Surgery makes Medical History at IU Health West Hospital with Dr Barry Eppley

Plastic Surgery is commonly performed as the reconstructive part of an operation with many surgical disciplines from General Surgery, Urology, Pediatric Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery as well as Obstetrics and Gynecology. It is rare, however, that cosmetic plastic surgery is done at the same time, on a different part of the body, with other surgical disciplines.

Such was the case on December 19, 2007 at IU Health West Hospital in Avon, Indiana. A 45 year-old female underwent a combined Gynecologic and Plastic Surgery operation. Dr. Kelly Kasper of IU Ob-Gyn performed a laparoscopic hysterectomy. During the one hour that it took her to complete the procedure, Dr Barry Eppley performed cosmetic surgery of the eyelids including removing excess skin and fat and tightening of the lower eyelids with a chemical peel. (lower eyelid lift) Both Gynecologic and Plastic Surgery were done at the same time in a one hour time period.

While neither operation is unusual, performing both at the same time is and, in my experience, has never been done at the same time before. Such coordination between surgeons allows wonderful benefits to be gained by patients in a cost-effective manner.

Eppley Plastic Surgery at IU Health North and West Hospitals

Since the opening of IU Health West Hospital in Avon, Indiana in 2004 and IU Health North Hospital in Carmel, Indiana in 2005, Eppley Plastic Surgery opened dedicated offices to plastic surgery and spa therapies  in these hospitals. Dr. Barry Eppley brings his extensive experience from Indiana University where he has performed thousands of life-changing operations on adults and children. Dr. Eppley has tremendous experience in the reconstruction of facial birth defects and injuries which translates well into aesthetic reshaping of facial features, such as in rhinoplasty, and reversing the effects of facial aging in procedures such as facelifts, browlifts, and blepharoplasty surgery. Dr. Eppley performs body contouring procedures as well including breast augmentation, lifts, and reductions, liposuction, tummytucks, and major body reshaping after bariatric surgery.

What Dr. Eppley really likes is the atmosphere of the IUI Health North and IU Health West locations which fits well with his relaxed and personalized style of patient relationships. Taking the time with patients to understand their needs and desires and develop a treatment plan specific to their goals is a major part of Dr. Eppley’s approach to plastic surgery. According to Dr. Eppley……the patient’s problem is what they see……and a good result is what makes the patient happy. Dr. Eppley sees patients six days a week, including Saturdays, at the IU Health North and IU Health West locations.

Plastic Surgery and Ology Spa Services at IU Health North Hospital
In Carmel, Indiana – Merging Medicine, Wellness, and Beauty

Since 2006, I have opened and operated the second location of the Ology Spa and my plastic surgery practice in the IU Health North Hospital in Carmel, Indiana on the northside of Indianapolis. Because of its wonderful design and beautiful exterior and interiors, a few comments about IIU Health North Hospital are in order.

Situated on the main throughfare of the northside’s bustling business community at the south end of Carmel, IU Health North is a full-service 170-bed community-based hospital which also serves as the north campus of the renowned Riley Hospital for Children, one of the founding three hospitals of the IU Health hospital systems.  IIU Health North offers a full range of patient care services providing exceptional care and service for the whole family. From its exterior limestone to the warmth of the interior hallways and all private patient rooms, IU Health North is a testament to the merger of art, healthcare, and a healing environment. Reconstructive plastic surgery is most visible in IU Health North as a complement to the Breast Cancer center for breast reconstruction, the Bariatric Center for body contouring after weight loss, and pediatric plastic surgery.

The design of IU Heaklth North and my Ology Spa facilities work very well together. Ology spa is situated just inside one of the main entrances of the hospitaland is lined with an all-glass exterior, revealing the large display of skin care and gift items. Ology spa design incorporates natural elements, such as bamboo flooring, water fountains, and organic colors. The facility has ample space for spa treatment rooms, offering massage, hydrotherapy and medical skin care, as well as plastic surgery consultation and treatment rooms.. Having both concepts in one facility, spa and plastic surgery, allows medical and cosmetic procedures to be done in a single location, enables a comprehensive approach to guest treatments before and after procedures, and allows higher-grade, more therapeutic skin and body product offerings.

The Synergy of Plastic Surgery and Ology Spa Services at IU Health West Hospital In Avon, Indiana

Since 2004, I have opened and operated the initial location of the Ology Spa and my plastic surgery practice at the beautiful IU Health West Hospital in Avon, Indiana on the westside of Indianapolis. Because of its magnificent design and very unique and tranquil setting, it is worth saying a few words about IU Health WEst.

Located on Indianapolis’ quiet west side, IU Health West Hospitak is a full-service 86-bed community-based hospital rooted in the history of excellence established by the IU Health hospital systems. IIU Health West Hospital offers a full range of patient care services – all delivered in their extraordinary Sanctuary of Healing environment designed to exceed patient’s expectations of the typical hospital experience. It is a health care environment unlike any that I have seen before, a true merger of outstanding caregivers, state-of-the-art medical technology, and the soothing qualities of a natural and organic environment. IU Health West is build around a central submerged garden which is filled with plants, trees and stone indigenous to the state of Indiana. The interior of the hospital is very soothing lined with natural slate, wood, and limestone. Just upon entering, you already feel relaxed and comforted and you quickly realize this is not a ‘typical’ hospital. IU Health West has even launched a new program that is perfectly in union with its design and philosophy, The Integrative Medicine Center, offering alternative healing therapies. Reconstructive Plastic Surgery is most evident at IU Health West as part of the Breast Center for breast reconstruction and general plastic surgery problems.

The design of IU Health West and my Ology Spa facilities could not be more in synch. Ology spa’s design incorporates natural elements, such as bamboo flooring, water fountains, and organic colors. The facility has ample space for spa treatment rooms, offering massage and medical skin care, as well as plastic surgery space for consultation and in-office treatments. Having both concepts in one facility, spa and plastic surgery, allows medical and cosmetic procedures to be done in a single location, enables a comprehensive approach to guest treatments before and after procedures, and allows higher-grade, more therapeutic skin and body product offerings.

Ology Spas – A Hospital-Based Concept

A Hospital-Based Spa – Integrating East and West

The past 10 years has seen a paradigm shift in plastic surgery with a large number of non-surgical office-based procedures for producing cosmetic changes. Botox, injectable fillers, LipoDissolve injections, light therapies, etc. have resulted in more office visits than any number of surgeries that could be performed. No longer is the plastic surgeon just a once-in-a-lifetime visit for simply having surgery. A visit to the plastic surgeon’s office today is done much more frequently…and usually not for surgery. This phenomenon, combined with an overall wellness or holistic approach to medicine, has created a unique opportunity to integrate or synergize all of these therapies and treatments in a single practice setting.

I created this change in 2004 to my practice by establishing the Ology Spa concept here in Indianapolis. It is a hospital-based spa practice concept that provides comprehensive plastic surgery and medical skin care (western medicine) with massage therapy, acupuncture, and other ayurvedic therapies (eastern medicine). Besides combining these therapies, the facilities were placed in newly-built suburban hospitals in the Indiana University Health System. The spa facilities were created, built, and treatment protocols established by my expert Director and co-owner, Andrea Bradley-Stutz, whose vision and tireless devotion to the concept are largely responsible for the wonderful facilities and services that we have today. With two locations at IU Health Hospitals in Avon Indiana and in Carmel Indiana, we provide care and services to not only those communities but to a large radius extending both into the city and out to Indiana’s western and northern borders.

It has been a wonderful addition/integration to my plastic surgery practice. My patients can enjoy the tremendous skills of our medical aestheticians and massage therapists both before or after surgery, simply come in to relax and enjoy the soothing ayurvedic therapies, receive an organic manicure or pedicure, or receive acupuncture treatments for the treatment of chronic pain, to lose weight, or stop smoking. This is truly one stop shopping for all of your wellness and beauty needs!
